NO WAR. NO POVERTY.

Sat, 06/28/2008 - 7:00pm
There is a war going in Iraq, Afghanistan and Cleveland....... Over 1 million people are dead and millions remain homeless. As the casualties of war continue soar and foreclosure rates continue to climb, our government continues to allocate more funding for bombs and one penny for the people. The cost of one day in war could be used to feed the hungry, educate the youth, heal the sick, raise the workers wages, and house the homeless. Instead our tax money is used on torture, murder, rape, and destruction. We demand a complete moratorium on military spending. We demand reparations for the victims of war. We demand jobs, food, homes, education and health care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Daniel Thompson Memorial Bread Run

Sun, 05/18/2008 - 10:00pm
A call for Poets, volunteers and activist types... On Sunday May 18th, Cleveland Food Not Bombs will be holding the first Daniel Thompson Memorial Bread Run to honor the spirit of the poet Daniel Thompson and that which he stood for. Daniel was a voice and advocate for the homeless in Cleveland and was active in helping impoverished people in the downtown and Public Square area. He was a mentor of CLEFNB and to this day our organization still operates one of the Bread Runs that we inherited from him. We hope, on this day in a communal manner to honor this man and help raise Daniel's spirit once again over Public Square and amongst those in need. The event will consist of two actions: On Sunday at 11am, we will gather together in two groups, one in the Eastern suburbs and another group in the West Suburbs. The groups will travel around collecting donated bread and food. Poets with us will be reading Daniel's poems as we go along. The two groups will meet in Public Square at Daniel's Way (West 2nd and Rockside). Then at 2pm, on the lawn of the NW quadrant of Public Sq, next to Daniel's Way...the bread and food will be honored in ceremonial fashion and packed up for distribution to areas "outside of the permitted area allocated to us on Public Square." An open poetry reading to honor Daniel will lead and reverberate amongst us as we work to get things ready for distribution. Anyone wishing to bring a dish or food to offer up to others would be appreciated. Everyone in attendance of the ceremony will be given some of the food to distribute or be welcomed in helping to distribute food with CLEFNB as a larger group effort in and around the downtown area. Every Sunday, CLEFNB serves food in communal fashion to all interested at a site near Public Square...we have done so for the last twelve years and intend to continue doing so within the Public Spaces of downtown Cleveland. This action on Sunday will culminate with the initial rolling out of our FNB mobile distribution wagon. So we could really use some help making sure all goes well as we attempt to change the way in which we distribute food to those who need it. If you would be interested in helping us gather food at 11am on Sunday, please contact us directly at 216-220-0590 or Glowbawl@netscape.net. We would really appreciate an audience at 2pm while we prepare to distribute the food and would urge poets interested in helping us to attend. Although it's not required, please contact us if you intend to read or can volunteer their time that afternoon. Recently, Cleveland and Public Square has witnessed the return of overly dramatic mean-spirited public initiatives against the homeless who find themselves once again being isolated and subjected to unnecessarily harsh conditions. The Downtown Cleveland Alliance has for more than a year fronted a public relations campaign against the homeless that touts "don't give where it doesn't help". They have singled out panhandlers as a scourge to be eliminated and the homeless to be moved from view, while mistakenly creating an unwelcome zone for the impoverished poor in an area that historically they had chosen as refuge because of the public space and nearby public amenities. The City of Cleveland has imposed a night time curfew on the public spaces of Public Square to keep the homeless from sleeping there. In addition the City has tagged Food groups serving the homeless within Public Square with the notion that they are illegally feeding rats and as such are a health nuisance. The groups have been restricted from serving in public spaces under the City's jurisdiction and banned them under police order from serving food from within the public spaces of Public Square. In addition, youth under 18 have been banned from Tower City after 2:30 PM, under the most retaliative and harsh shopping maul regulations in the nation which is being enforced by Cleveland police (the PIP program is billed as a way to protect children and instead it results in youth being arrested). This at a time in which statistics indicate that many Clevelanders are having a more difficult time getting by statistically with necessities such as food, utilities, rent/mortgages, and employment. Naq'ba, the Catastrophe, 60 years

Thu, 05/15/2008 - 3:00pm
Protest the illegal occupation of Palestine and 60 years of the Naq'ba. Join our "Free Speech Occupation" at the federal building plaza. Background: May 15, 1948, the Naq'ba (the "catastrophe") was the initial displacement of Palestinians from their homes and taking of their property to make way for the creation of the state of Israel. To this day ,no Palestinian has received compensation for this injustice and the brutal, deadly Occupation of Palestine continues. New Israeli settlements continue to encroach on Palestinian land. An israeli built separation wall winds through Palestine keeping farmers from their fields and families and friends from visiting each other. A network of Israeli checkpoints keep Palestinians waiting for hours to move through their own territory. Palestinian homes are destroyed continually to make way fro new Israeli settlements. US taxpayers need to know that it is our money that funds this international crime, so deemed by the United Nations and Geneva Conventions

Imagine being confined in isolation with no human contact. Imagine the shakedowns, the strip searches and the complete disregard for your humanity. Crime Against Humanity is a play based on the real life experiences of fourteen Puerto Rican political prisoners who spent more than two decades in prisons for seditious conspiracy—two of whom are still incarcerated. Crime Against Humanity brings us into the U.S. prison system in a way no other play has, focusing on the politically motivated use of isolation, selective punishment, sensory deprivation and disproportionate sentences. Written by poet and activist Michael Anthony Reyes Benavides and former Puerto Rican political prisoner Luis Rosa, the play confronts the physical and mental torture these prisoners endured for more than 27 years. We gaze into their cell and experience the loss of parents, the transition of children into adulthood and feel the physical brutality and torture of a government out to make an example of them. We see them as they refuse to be victimized and objectified, confronting their hardships and adversities while maintaining their dignity, and upholding their humanity. Reyes Benavides spent hours interviewing the former Puerto Rican political prisoners, and through extensive written correspondence, the two remaining political prisoners Oscar López Rivera and Carlos Alberto Torres. Through the play, we hear from their own mouths, their own words, exactly what it means to be a political prisoner in the United States. Crime Against Humanity is produced by the National Boricua Human Rights Network and Batey Urbano. These two organizations hope to use this performance piece to raise consciousness and gain support for the campaign to free the remaining Puerto Rican political prisoners. “By using theater as a tool of resistance, we hope to reach out to those sectors that are often ignored by traditional activist outreach. We want our families, our brothers and sisters and our community to come out and see what these prisoners endured, many of them for almost 20 years, two of them for more than 27″ (author and director Reyes Benavides). Crime Against Humanity will run from March 3rd, 2008 through March 3rd, 2009 as a part of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center’s”100 x 35″ campaign. This campaign will be celebrating the centennial of the birth of Puerto Rican national hero and poet Juan Antonio Corretjer and the 35th year of the founding of the Chicago-based Juan Antonio Corretjer Puerto Rican Cultural Center. As part of this celebration a national tour of the play will make stops in several U.S. cities: New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Hartford, Washington D.C., Boston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The production has plans to tour throughout Puerto Rico in the future as well. For more information contact Michael Anthony Reyes Benavides at reyespoetry@gmail.com or 773 606 4014. From the shores of Africa to the Americas, 'Salud' hits the road with some of the 28,000 Cuban health professionals serving 68 countries, and explores the hearts and minds of international medical students in Cuba -- now numbering 30,000, including nearly 100 from the USA. In books and articles, Mount Holyoke Professor of PoliticsDr. Christopher H. Pyle has questioned policies enactedunder the current President and the Congress in the name ofthe war on terrorism. On April 21, he will discuss hisconclusions in a free public lecture, "Government Secrecyand the Rule of Law," at 5:00 p.m. in the Moot Court Room ofthe law school on East 18th and Euclid Avenue. In the late 1960s, Dr. Pyle was an army captain teachingconstitutional law at the U.S. Army Intelligence School inFort Holabird, Maryland, when he learned about the army'sdomestic spying operation, which employed 1,500 plainclothesmilitary personnel spying on antiwar and civil rightsprotesters across the country. In the 1970s, Dr. Pyle's Congressional testimony helpedlaunch U.S. Senator Sam Ervin's Subcommittee onConstitutional Rights and U.S. Senator Frank Church's SelectCommittee on Intelligence. As a result, the entire U.S.Army Intelligence Command was abolished, all its files ondissidents were burned and the Foreign IntelligenceSurveillance Act of 1978 (FISA) was created.
