Peace Action is the nation's largest grassroots peace organization, with approximately 100,000 members and more than 100 state and local chapters in 27 states. Formerly known as SANE/FREEZE, the organization was formed in 1987 by the merger of the Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (founded in 1957) and the Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign (founded in 1981). The first National Congress was held in Cleveland in 1987. Peace Action works for global nuclear disarmament, ratification of a comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty, an end to the proliferation of nuclear and conventional weapons, a reduced military budget, economic conversion of military industry and investment in community needs, alternatives to war and violence, and real national security achieved through cooperation with other nations, satisfaction of human needs, and protection of human rights. Peace Action is growing nationally and is part of two major national coalitions: United for Peace and Justice and Win Without War. It works closely with members of Congress. The Student Peace Action Network (SPAN) organizes college and high school students. Cleveland Peace Action began as the Greater Cleveland Nuclear Weapons Freeze Campaign in 1981. Because there is no Ohio state affiliate, we are a "chapter" of national Peace Action. We support the goals of the national organization but also advocate our own positions and policies, especially those with local relevance and interest.
